First trimester of pregnancy
1st Trimester Duration: Weeks 1 through Week 13
During the first six weeks, you may not feel any different. In fact, you probably will not know for sure until you miss your period. Then you may feel nauseous and fatigued. During the seventh week, the baby's development begins. He or she will begin growing eyes, ears, nose, heart and other organs. By the eighth week, you will be able to hear the baby's heart by ultrasound.
Did you know that you can find out the gender of your baby as early as you take a pregnancy test?
During week nine, the baby will develop bones, and arms and legs will take shape. At this time, feet and hands will be webbed. By the end of the tenth week, the baby will be small but fully developed. You may then experience more nausea and perhaps heartburn. During weeks 12 and 13, your baby grows quickly in size. Your fatigue may increase, and you may require more intake of food. You can now determine its sex through a sonogram, and see it for the first time at the doctor's office. As the first trimester ends, so does the dizziness, nausea and fatigue. Can you fly during first trimester?
It is best to always ask your doctor if it's ok for you to air travel during your first trimester. Women that have medical complications are not recommended to fly since there might be an increased chance of having a miscarriage.
First trimester nuchal translucency
Nuchal translucency scan is done between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy to help your doctor assess the baby's risk of having Down syndrome and some other chromosomal abnormalities.
Spotting during first trimester
Some women may experience cramps and some spotting during their first trimester which is very common. However, if there is a lot of bleeding, then you should see your doctor to make sure that everything is going well with your pregnancy. Bleeding can also be a sign of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy.
Effects of smoking first trimester
Women should avoid smoking during pregnancy. Some serious effects of smoking during pregnancy are the following: miscarriage, low birth weight, congenital heart defects, sudden infant death syndrome.
Sex during first trimester
It is safe to have sex during your first trimester unless you are told otherwise by your doctor. Sex during early pregnancy can be a wonderful experience for most couples.
